Short Drop Cave (Leck Fell)

This was my first trip with the Craven Pothole Club. The trip involved a short pitch for which a ladder and lifeline was used. Some of the others did a free climb bit though I didn’t fancy it! Next time I’ll take a camera (preferably in a hard case!).

Here’s a quick video (not mine) of one of the larger parts of the cave showing a rock bridge.

Horsehead Moor

A sunday ride with the boggies. Pretty nice weather with only one brief downpour.

Second climb of the day towards Horse Head (605m)..

Second climb of the day towards Horse Head (605m)

Route was from Horton in Ribblesdale, round the side of Pen-y-Ghent on Foxup Moor, down to Halton Gill then up to Horse Head. Here it was down into Langstrothdale before the ‘push’ up to Firth Fell at 607m and a downhill to Littondale. More relaxed biking followed past Dawson Close and Dale Head.

Job done in 6hrs (37km, 1286m ascent) with at least an hour spent pushing our bikes :O

Ladybower (small) loop.

Far too hot for a full loop (50km tough!), so a shortened version (18km 950m ascent) was the order of the day..

A lot of the going was a bit more technical than I expected. Great area though and I plan to have a go at the full loop in the next couple of weeks 🙂

Malham, Mastiles Ln. & Kilnsey.

It was a lovely hot day for [yet] another trip to the South Dales. This was a bit of a repeat of last weeks ride, the aim being to do it correctly this time around!

Mastiles Lane towards Kilnsey.

Mastiles Lane towards Kilnsey.

The ride started in Airton with some scenic on-road (hard climbing)
stuff up to Malham Tarn, passing school parties on their way to Malham Cove. After passing the tarn in was onto Mastiles Lane, passing the Roman marching camp and some highland cattle before heading over towards Kilnsey. I nearly missed (noo, not a repeat of last week!) the bridleway towards Boss Moor and some singletrack-esque sections. A
track descended to Hetton from where it was back to Airton via the village of Winterburn and some typically scenic Dales roads.

10/10 for a not particularly technical but nevertheless great fun mtb ride 🙂

I’ve also made a video for this one. Not great editing for my first try.. I need Pinnacle Studio! and shot whilst riding with one hand 😮 . See what you think and feel free to comment.. [second one is done with Pinnacle studio! – 5/07/09]

The Calf (Howgill Fells) mtb

My partner canceled for climbing at Windgather so I headed up to join the boggies for an evening ride up The Calf in the Howgill Fells. It was an up and down sort of affair from Sedbergh with a brutish 641m ascent over 6km to ‘warm up’! 🙂

Langcliffe, Malham & Mastiles mtb (wrong way)

It was a bit of a wrong way one today. Nice ride anyway though and only one heavy shower! Just mapped it and got 35km with 786m of ascent (60% of ride on road) in 2.5hrs. I started really late (1.45pm) and was a bit stressed to get back home for 6pm, so didn’t fancy doing the original route after my (unplanned) detour. Note to self – must buy a cycle computer 🙂 It will make it so much easier!

First bit of bridleway from Malham - typical S. Dales stuff.
